Eating Out In & Around Torrington
There's plenty of choice when it comes to eating out in Torrington. However, I make it a rule only to recommend places I've actually eaten in and been pleased by. Here are a few.
For good honest local dishes; steaks and fowl and the like, The West Of England bistro pub in South Street and The Black Horse pub in The High Street both excel.
For a completely different experience, try the Theatre Cafe at The Plough Arts Centre in Fore Street. Superb coffee, lovely little snacks and wonderfully tasty lunch and dinner dishes such as Kiln-Roasted Salmon Salad and Devon Beef in Wild Mushroom Sauce make the experience a very special one.
For a completely organic wholefood meal go to Browns Delicatessen in South Street especially at lunch time.
If Michelin stars were awarded for fish and chips, Taffs in South Street would easily secure three. Ultra thin batter on the fish, lusciously firm chips and mushy peas to die for. Unhesitatingly recommended.
Finally, an out of town recommendation. For a truly memorable meal with superb wine go to The Rising Sun, a small pub-hotel at Umberleigh, 8 miles from Torrington. Lack of space prevents me from saying more than a few words about the place. The menu is kept sensibly short but every dish is a superb example of its kind. A great wine list too. Do go!
