Nearby Attractions Torrington
The area has so many attractions and places of interest that I've had to restrict myself to a few examples which are easily reached from Torrington.
Clovelly
18 miles away, an ancient village with astonishingly steep cobbled streets leading down to a tiny harbour and quay. Wonderfully atmospheric!
Hartland point
a few miles further on from Clovelly, projects dramatically into the Bristol Channel and has a lighthouse to warn seafarers away from the dangerous rocks below the Point. Look out for wreckers!
The Big Sheep
about 9 miles away; 2 miles past Bideford, once a sheep farm now an educational entertainment centre for children and adults
Dartington Crystal
the famous producer of lead crystal glassware is situated just a short walk from the town centre. Watch glassblowers at work, try your hand at glass painting, marvel at examples of decorated glass through the ages. Look for 'seconds' in the factory shop.
Lundy Island
twelve miles off the North Devon coast - is reached by ship from Bideford Quay. The tiny island is a bird sanctuary, a wild flower paradise and an excellent centre for walkers and climbers.
Westward Ho!
9 miles from Torrington - a tiny seaside resort with an enormously wide and long soft sandy beach and safe shallow waters.
Exmoor National Park.
The smallest national park in Britain was one of the five ancient royal forests of England . Largely made up of wild expanses of grassy moorland, heather clad uplands and wooded combes, the Park is famous for its wild ponies, red deer and small-horned sheep. Wonderful walking country interspersed with ancient villages and farms.
Tarka Trail
Just outside the town, on the road to Bideford, you can get onto the Tarka Trail, a 180 mile looping course through North and Mid Devon. The trail covers every kind of terrain from coastal path to upland moor and is perfect for walkers and cyclists who want to see some real countryside.
Go to the North Devon tourism website for other exciting places to visit including historic Appledore and the lovely coastal resorts of Woolacombe, Ilfracombe and Bude (just over the border in Cornwall)
