Walking Around Torrington

Torrington and North Devon Country Walks

Local walks around Torrington

Start with a walk around Torrington Commons and the Golf course. (About 3.5 miles). A slightly more demanding treck is to start at Torrington Commons and take the path downhill to join the road near the old Torrington Station (now the puffing billy pub). About 250 yards further down the road At the Frithelstock junction turn left and head uphill. After the Monkleigh turning you should head down a bridleway on the left hand side of the road and head down through woodlands to a pretty cottage. Now go left, through the gate and then over the pretty wooden footbridge. You can now join the Tarka Trail and either head off towards Bideford which takes about 2 hours or continue straight ahead up a green lane to pass Servis Farm. Take the downhill track to Taddiport to meet the B3227. Continue downstram as far as you fancy before turning round and heading back up the hill to Torrington.

Although this is a shorter walk than many people ask for, the climb back up to Torrington will bring a glow to your cheeks. Dont forget to stop and admire the view down to Taddiport. May we also suggest a circular walk taking in the town of Torrington itself and another part of the Commons. The Torrington Information Centre in the South Street carpark now has leaflets for a number of such short walks.

For something more challenging, try the various walks on Exmoor. These vary between 11 miles and 4 miles in length across this lovely moor. Again the Torrington Information Centre will offer you a number of alternatives. Finally, for some really long distance walking, or indeed, cycling, try the Tarka Trail - or a section of it's 186 miles.
